“The truest expression of a people is in its dance and in its music. Bodies never lie.” – Agnes de Mille
“Dancers are messengers of the gods.” – Martha Graham
I hold a firm belief that Dance is an art and a discipline that can expand a person’s horizons. The discipline that dance can instill on a child’s life is in itself a reward. It doesn’t matter whether that child grows up to become a professional dancer or not, the discipline of the work we do in dance will stay with this child forever. The ability to be creative with the body is invaluable to children growing up in a post-modern world of digital lives whose minds and bodies don’t seem need to leave the computer screen. To have access to an outlet of physical creativity is more important now than ever.
To be given the opportunity to combine the discipline and creativity of dance and share it with this special community is something I am very grateful for and I hope that you will come and dance with us! I also hope to use my position at Carleton to bridge the world of dance for the community of Northfield with the dance community of Carleton College and St Olaf colleges. Exchanging information, sharing performances and creative opportunities for all these communities.
I hope to expand the demographics of the students of NDA to include more adults, senior citizens and college students as well as offering more classes to children who might otherwise not get to experience it fully. We will continue to offer classes in the techniques of ballet, tap, jazz and hip-hop, but we will also offer new classes in modern dance, music theatre and even composition and improvisation. For our debut year, the NDA Company produced “Peter and the Wolf, ” which was a huge success! For our second year, we will be choreographing “Carnival of the Animals” for our 2014-2015 season
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have! And please look at our list of Summer Dance Camps going on all summer long and our new roster of classes for the fall. Let’s fill these classes and get Northfield dancing!
I look forward to meeting and dancing with you all!
